Did you know that 55% of sexual assaults occur at or near the survivor’s home? When a survivor is sexually assaulted in their home, they are faced with the difficult decision of whether they should stay in their home or move.
However, the State of Louisiana does not allow lease termination for sexual assault survivors. Louisiana HB 375, sponsored by Rep. Aimee Adatto Freeman, will allow sexual assault to be included as a reason for early residential lease termination in the State of Louisiana. This bill empowers survivors to make the best decision for their safety by allowing them to terminate their lease early without penalty.
This bill will be presented at the House Civil Law and Procedure Committee on Wednesday, April 14, 2021.
